About
I spent the vast majority of my life doing the right thing. It never occurred to me that I should do otherwise. I spent a lifetime building a reputation for honesty and integrity, only to throw that all away in an instant due to a few foolish decisions. That’s all it takes. I’d like to consider my life as a cautionary tale.
Confucius said, “By three methods we may learn wisdom:
First by reflection, which is noblest; second by imitation, which is easiest;
and third by experience, which is bitterest.”
Unlike me, who had to learn my lesson the hard way, I hope you might learn by reflection or imitation and avoid the grief and regret I struggle with today. I spent fifteen solid years working in the pharmaceutical and medical sales industry. During that period, I had the privilege of providing numerous lifesaving and health-improving drugs to thousands of people suffering from medical ailments.
I also sold medical devices for some of the world’s largest companies and several Silicon Valley medical device start-up companies. I was personally responsible for launching products offered to doctors in hospitals and clinics in my region, growing the product rollout from the ground up. I took great pride in my work and had been taught the highly intricate and regulated ground rules for selling in the medical field. I was greatly aware of the heavy responsibility that came along with this incredible opportunity.
For most of my career, I chose wisely and made a good living. However, as time wore on, I began to make poor business decisions that gave rise to dire consequences. I became ensconced in ego, believing I could do no wrong, as I took risks for the sake of short-term gain. I gambled my entire career away for greed and now write this openly for all to see, to awaken true reflection and humility.
I hold myself accountable, accept responsibility, and prepare for my ongoing journey now steeped with a reborn ethical compass. I made a critical mistake that does not define who I am or what I am capable of. Through my legal adversity, I birthed a dream of having a boxing club to train fighters. I have always been passionate about teaching children and adults more about the sport I love. In the depths of my setback, I envisioned opportunity, and through a great pivot, I make amends for my past by living an honorable and giving future.
I now have the opportunity and responsibility to help others not make the same mistakes I made and to avoid others that may cross their path. I focus on mindfully assisting people in making wise choices both inside and outside the ring. I use (and will continue to use) this incredible platform to better myself as I carry the cross mandated as a coach and teacher. Each day is a personal accountability checker.
My story will be the Straight A guide that my children, students, community, and the world can observe. I want them to follow the bright new trail I will blaze. I am remorseful for my mistakes but thankful for them. In me, they have built character and helped me discover my true purpose. It’s not the situations in life that matter, but how we handle our lives through those situations that mark the measure of a man.
